The Three Legacies

Al-Anon’s Three Legacies encompass Recovery through the STEPSUnity through the TRADITIONS, and Service through the CONCEPTS.

Adopted almost word for word from Alcoholics Anonymous, the Twelve Steps of Al-Anon are the Steps followed by each of us along this very personal path to recovery. We are not alone, as these Steps have been followed by those who came before us and are being followed by those who walk this path with us now. The universal principles embodied by these Steps can bring us wisdom, serenity, and a deeper connection with a Power greater than ourselves.

The Twelve Traditions guide the members of each Al-Anon Family Group as they learn to work together in unity and to respect one another while honoring the principles of the program. These principles ensure the survival of Al-Anon as a self-sustaining and collaborative system of peer support and recovery for those who suffer the effects of the family disease of alcoholism.

Al-Anon’s service organizations function effectively by following principles summarized in the Twelve Concepts of Service. By applying these principles at every level of service, Al-Anon members can learn to work together with an even greater sense of unity. These same Concepts can also help us build better relationships with our families, friends, colleagues, and communities.
