District Service Positions

Service is vital to the success of District 11, which currently serves the needs of about thirty Al-Anon Family Groups (AFGs) in Marin County, California. Please offer your time, energy, experience, strength, and hope to fulfill one of the following service positions. Training and service sponsorship are always available, so do not hesitate to volunteer.

District Representative

Sets the agenda for District meetings and leads these meetings; facilitates the flow of communications between District Officers, Coordinators, Group Representatives (GRs), and their Alternates; visits AFGs throughout the District; serves as an active member of the Area World Service Committee (AWSC) for Northern California; provides Area-level information to District 11 GRs by maintaining open communications with the Area Delegate and with fellow members of the AWSC. To qualify for election for this service position, one must be an incoming or outgoing GR for a District 11 AFG or a past GR who is still active in the Al-Anon program in Marin County, California.

Al-Anon / AA Liaison

Actively participates in Al-Anon meetings within District 11 Marin as an Al-Anon member; attends AA District/Intergroup meetings as an Al-Anon contact; understands the cooperative relationship between Al-Anon and Alcoholics Anonymous as described in the current Al-Anon/Alateen Service Manual and in other Conference Approved Literature; accepts and extends invitations to attend planning sessions for events with AA/Al-Anon shared participation; provides copies of flyers for such events to the District Website Coordinator for posting.

Alateen Coordinator

Administers all Alateen meetings and related activities within District 11; attends Area or regional Alateen gatherings as necessary; works closely with the NCWSA Alateen Coordinator, the District Alateen Process Person (DAPP), and the Area Alateen Process Person to fulfill these responsibilities. This certified and experienced AMIAS (Al-Anon Member Involved in Alateen Service) serves as a resource for those seeking information regarding Alateen meetings, Conference Approved Literature for Alateen members, Alateen sponsorship and AMIAS training, Alateen safety guidelines, and other Alateen-related matters.

Book Depot Coordinator

Maintains an inventory (both physically and digitally) of Conference Approved Literature to be sold to groups and individuals; manages the sales process, including shipping and personal delivery; orders additional literature as necessary from WSO; works with the District Treasurer to account for Book Depot sales and purchases; serves as Shop Manager for the Book Depot Online.

Budget Coordinator

(Open Position)

Develops an annual budget for review and approval by the GRs of District 11 based on past and forecasted income and expenses; works closely with the District Treasurer to monitor cashflow for the current budget period; adjusts the budget as necessary throughout the fiscal year and brings these adjustments to the attention of the GRs for their approval.

District Alateen Process Person

(Open Position)

Coordinates the requisite activities and related paperwork to certify a qualified Al-Anon member as an AMIAS (Al-Anon Member Involved in Alateen Service) who can then serve as a chaperone or driver for an Alateen member or as an Alateen group sponsor; works closely with the District Alateen Coordinator, the Area Alateen Process Person, and the NCWSA Alateen Coordinator to fulfill these responsibilities.

Diversity Services Coordinator

Focuses on attracting friends and family members of alcoholics who are of any age, cultural experience, or personal identity; engages in such outreach opportunities as hosting information tables at health fairs and educational gatherings, meeting with local leaders of diverse groups, and inviting members of these groups to participate in District 11 events. Ideally, the Diversity Coordinator speaks Spanish fluently and participates in Spanish-speaking Al-Anon meetings and other community activities.

Events Coordinator

(Open Position)

Develops and manages virtual and in-person events as approved by, and on behalf of, District 11 Marin; works in collaboration with the Al-Anon/AA Liaison when these events are presented in cooperation with Alcoholics Anonymous; serves as a resource for events sponsored by Al-Anon Family Groups within the District; maintains the News/Events page of our website.

Group Records Coordinator

Maintains accurate records of Al-Anon Family Groups in District 11 Marin in keeping with the practices of NCWSA and WSO and relies on the NCWSA Group Records Coordinator as a resource in this regard; ensures that the email address list used by our District Representative is updated on a monthly basis; provides a current list of District Officers, Coordinators, Group Representatives, and their Alternates to the hosting team before each District meeting; maintains the District Service Roster and related information that is posted to our website behind District login credentials.

Institutions Coordinator

(Open Position)

Facilitates the distribution of Al-Anon Conference Approved Literature to those who have found protection in crisis shelters or are confined to hospitals, treatment centers, prisons, jails, or detention centers; cultivates supportive and mutually educational relationships with professionals within these institutions; works closely with the District Public Outreach Coordinator, the Book Depot Coordinator, and the NCWSA Institutions Coordinator to fulfill these responsibilities.

Mail Services Coordinator

Picks up the mail from the District’s post office box; delivers incoming checks and invoices in a timely manner to the District Treasurer; distributes mail as addressed to each AFG via the GR or a specified member of the Group. 

Meeting Lists Coordinator

Serves as a member of the Website Maintenance Team, updating meeting webpages as necessary and in a timely manner; updates the two-sided, foldable meetings list on a monthly basis to distribute to in-person meetings throughout District 11; provides an updated PDF version of this list to the Website Coordinator on a monthly basis for posting as a viewable, downloadable, and printable document.

Public Outreach Coordinator

Develops, manages, and engages in opportunities to carry the Al-Anon/Alateen message to the general public and to such professionals as physicians, therapists, judges, attorneys, law enforcement, educators, and community leaders (both secular and religious); works closely with the District Institutions Coordinator, the District Events Coordinator, and the NCWSA Public Outreach Coordinator to fulfill these responsibilities.

Recording Secretary

Assembles notes taken at each District meeting into a readable format of motions made, votes taken, and topics discussed; provides a copy of these District meeting minutes to the District Representative for circulation to the GRs; updates the minutes when/if requested at the next meeting; and compiles an ongoing record of District meeting minutes. The Recording Secretary may also be relied upon to count the number of voting GRs present during roll call and to document other District information as necessary.

Technology Coordinator

Serves as a resource for equipping and facilitating hybrid meetings held by Al-Anon Family Groups in District 11 Marin; staffs and supports the District meeting hosting team; serves as Zoom Account Administrator for the District; serves as a resource for the Telephone Services Coordinator regarding his/her equipment or service-related needs; provides support in preparing documents for presentation or screen sharing for a District meeting; works closely with the District Representative and others in District-level service to fulfill these responsibilities.

Telephone Services Coordinator

Answers calls coming in through the District’s primary phone number; records an inviting and informative voicemail message; checks voicemail on a daily basis and returns calls as requested; serves as the first point of contact for those who may be in crisis and are seeking the comfort and support of an Al-Anon meeting; cultivates connections with experienced Al-Anon members who are willing to make or accept followup calls; works closely with the Meeting Lists Coordinator, the Website Coordinator, and others in District-level service to ensure that supportive and accurate information is available to these callers.

Treasurer

Manages and documents all accounts payable and receivable for District 11; maintains a prudent reserve and detailed financial records; works closely with the District Budget Coordinator to monitor cashflow on an ongoing basis; serves as a resource for the Treasurers of District 11 AFGs; works closely with others in District 11 service to ensure that they have the financial support they need to fulfill their responsibilities. 

Website Coordinator

Serves as Administrator for the District’s website; trains, manages, and supports all members of the Website Maintenance Team; routinely reviews website content and navigation links to ensure readability, effectiveness, and continued functionality using analytics and search engine optimization tools; serves as liaison with the website hosting company and related service providers.
